If you are learning to drive in Wolverhampton or you have a test booked at the Wolverhampton driving test centre, preparation is the key to success. Many learners are caught out by the same difficult roads and junctions near the test centre.

By knowing what to expect, you can build confidence, reduce nerves and improve your chances of passing first time. Below, we highlight five of the most common places where learners go wrong in Wolverhampton and offer practical advice for how to navigate them confidently.

Dudley Road – Giving Way Towards the City Centre (WV2 4LY)

One of the first tricky spots is on Dudley Road heading into the city. Before the A459 merges into the ring road, there is a junction with give way lines and a give way sign. These markings are faint and often overlooked. Examiners regularly step in with the brake here, which results in an instant fail. The answer is simple: always slow down, look carefully for the markings and be ready to stop.

Cartwright Street – Right Lane to Turn Right (WV2 3LT)

At the end of Cartwright Street, a one-way road off Dudley Road, you will usually be told to turn right. Many learners drift left and end up in the wrong position. The rule here is clear: if you are turning right from a one-way street, you must use the right-hand lane. Position yourself correctly well before the junction to avoid hesitation or last-minute swerving.

Bull Ring Roundabout – Left Lane for the Second Exit (DY3 1RU)

The Bull Ring roundabout can be confusing. Approaching on the A459, learners are often asked to take the second exit to Dudley Street. The first exit, Mill Bank, is barely visible, so students sometimes miscount and assume the second exit is Dean Street instead. This mistake often causes drivers to sit too far right. To get this correct, remember: the Dudley Street exit is the second one, so position in the left lane early and follow it round steadily.

Millfields Road to the A463 – Double Roundabout Positioning (WV14 0QJ)

When coming from Millfields Road, the instruction is usually to follow signs for Dudley, which means turning right at both roundabouts onto the A463. To succeed here, you must be in the right-hand lane on approach, stay in that lane through the first roundabout and continue in the right lane onto the second. Learners who exit the first roundabout in the left lane cannot turn right at the second, which forces them off course and leads to a fault.

Oxford Street Island – Use the Left Lane for the Second Exit (WV14 7EH)

The Oxford Street roundabout on the A41 often causes confusion. When asked to take the second exit to Dudley A463, learners see two approach lanes. The left lane is marked with a left arrow, while the right shows straight and right. Many wrongly assume the left lane is only for the first exit. In fact, the left lane is the correct choice. From here, you can safely pass the first exit and turn onto the second. Using the right lane instead leads you towards the third exit, and trying to cut across is both dangerous and test-ending.

Conclusion

The Wolverhampton test centre has several difficult junctions and roundabouts close by. The overall pass rate is low (around 33.4% in September 2025), which reflects how easy it is to make mistakes under pressure. With the right preparation, you can approach these areas with confidence.
