One of the questions we get asked a lot, is should I take manual or automatic driving lessons? For some people they have no doubt which option they prefer. So, what is the difference and which should you choose?

As everyone is unique, it really is up to you and your circumstances, there are advantages and disadvantages to both.

For people who are nervous about learning to drive or those who feel they do not have the coordination required to drive a manual car learning in an automatic may be the option for them. An automatic car means that you do no have to worry about changing gears, the clutch, the biting point or stalling. People learning to driving in an automatic car often do not need as many lessons before they take their test and therefore take their test sooner, saving money on their lessons. However, taking driving lessons in an automatic car is often slightly more expensive than in a manual. If you take your driving test in an automatic car your licence will only entitle you to drive automatic cards. There are now many more automatic cars available including small cars, they are generally more fuel efficient but can be more expensive to buy.

Whilst learning to drive in a manual car may take a little longer than learning in an automatic, the manual driving lessons are usually cheaper. If you pass your test in a manual car your licence will entitle you to drive both manual and automatic cars giving you much more flexibility.

If you are not sure if a manual car is for you, then why not take a taster lesson and give it a go. If you find it’s not the right option for you then you can always try automatic lessons.
